Date: 19/3/16  15:00  Vanarama National League  Scoreline: Braintree 1-0 Chelternham
Braintree Town FC pulled off an impressive win over the current Vanarama National League leaders Chelternham. The atmosphere was great around the ground before kick off with a packed Braintree Town stadium with the supporters hoping for a win against top of the league Chelternham, this was going to be a real test for 5th placed Braintree. Former Braintree player Dan Holman started for Chelternham and was booked on his return to Braintree. Him and 4 other of his team -mates were booked over the 90 minutes, especially in a particularly dirty 1st half for the leaders. Braintree only had one booking going to C.Isaac in the 55th minute. Overall it was an even game with Chelternham only having more shots than the home side. Braintree had a good balance between long balls forward and creating chances slowly on the floor.
Chelternham took a similar approach with the possession stats around 50/50. 5th placed Braintree (before on 62 and after on 65 points) generally looked the better team for 80 minutes or so and got a well worked goal scored by M.Cheek in the 63rd minute when the ball was played down the right wing and crossed into the box for a fantastic headed goal from cheek. In the latter stages of the match, Chelternham pressed high and created chances but Braintree defended well trying to catch the away side out on the counter attack but couldn’t do it with some poor passing decisions made from certain players on the attack which all eventually only came to a couple of shots on goal. However it was enough to get an important 3 points and put them in contention for promotion to League 2 possibly with sure to be relegated Essex neighbors Colchester next season.
