Hakan Calhanoglu is the latest star to be linked with a move to Chelsea. The Turkish midfielder has just been hit with a 4-month ban for a breach of contract. Trabzonspor claims that Calhanoglu agreed to sign for them from Karlsruhe in 2011 yet stayed in Germany. However, amongst this chaos, Calhanoglu has recently been quoted as saying “God willing I will be a Chelsea player next season.”
To help out those fans who might not be so familiar with Hakan Calhanoglu, we’ve compiled a brief scout report.
Calhanoglu is an attacking player with an eye for goal. He is often employed in the number 10 role for Bayer Leverkusen and is best known for his shooting ability. Similar to Lampard, the 23-year-old loves to have a pop from outside the box. Calhanoglu is also one of the best free-kick takers about having converted 9 in the last 2 and a half seasons.
He also has a keen eye for a pass after recording 75 key passes last season, for some context that’s 28 more than Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos managed. Calhanoglu also possesses great ability with his weak foot, an attribute that most top players require these days.
Hakan is a more skilful player than he is given credit for and has the ability to glide past players before unleashing a fierce shot. The only question mark would be his work rate and that could be the defining characteristic over whether the Turk could fit into Antonio Conte’s side. Calhanoglu has been used up front multiple times but it is unlikely Conte will bring him to Stamford Bridge with that intention but don’t be surprised to see him play there occasionally.
Overall Hakan Calhanoglu is an exciting young talent and if he can adapt to the English game he could prove to be a shrewd signing should he move to Chelsea
