Manchester United have made Raphael Varane their top centre-back target this summer according to Sky Sports News.
Jose Mourinho is on the search for a new defender and a world-class striker after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.
Despite their low finish in the league, United were able to win the Europa League which guarantees Champions League football at Old Trafford next season.
The Red Devils have targeted Michael Keane from Burnley, Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton and Victor Lindelof from Benfica but have now turned their attention to Varane.
Mourinho was worked with the French international before during his time with Real Madrid, spending three years in the Spanish capital.
The 24-year-old revealed in 2015 that the current United boss had a huge influence on his career and would likely jump at the chance to reunite with the Portuguese tactician.
Speaking to Marca, Varane said “I was very hyper, not like how I appear calm today. But that phone call from Madrid changed everything. It was the craziest moment of my life. The phone kept ringing. I spent my exams signing autographs for the other students. I didn’t understand what was happening. It was surreal.”
Varane is regarded as one of the best defenders in the world but is not the first name on the team sheet at Madrid, making just 23 appearances in La Liga last season.
He will attempt to win his third Champions League title on Saturday when Real Madrid meet Juventus in the final of the competition in Cardiff.
Reports have suggested that Madrid will revive their interest in United goalkeeper David de Gea and could use Varane as a bargaining chip in any deal for the Spaniard.
The signing of the French defender could also cast doubt over the futures Phil Jones and Chris Smalling with Mourinho likely to use a centre-back partnership of Varane and Eric Bailly next season.
