This clash is one of the four all Premier League ties in this round of the league cup, formerly known as the Capital One Cup.
Venue: The Hawthorns
Date: Wednesday 20th September 2017
West Brom haven’t won a match since their last victory in the Carabao Cup, which entailed a 3-1 home win vs League Two side Accrington Stanley.
The Baggies lacked creativity in this weekend’s 0-0 home draw with West Ham United; the form book would suggest that it won’t get any easier to open up Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Spaniard’s men have come off the back of their impressive week, which saw them score 15 goals without conceding in just three games.
However, West Brom’s manager Tony Pulis said he won’t be fazed by City’s flawless form and will “put out a strong team” to attempt to enter the 4th round of the Carabao Cup.
Pulis has said that England midfielder Jake Livermore will not be involved at all in this fixture after being allowed some time to overcome his personal issues. The former Stoke City gaffer informed the media that Livermore is “mentally tired”.
Pep will undoubtedly make changes to the line-up with German international Ilkay Gundogan is expected to come into the midfield.
If Gundogan is selected, it will be his first start for City since December 2016. The former Dortmund midfielder returned last Saturday in City’s convincing 0-6 win against Watford at Vicarage Road after his cruciate knee ligament injury suffered when the two sides faced at the Etihad last season.
Gundogan posted an inspirational video on Instagram at the weekend, proving that his mental strength was helped by the fans, friends and staff at Manchester City.
City’s Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson Moraes is expected to be rested for this game. With Chilean Claudio Bravo scheduled to get his first start of the season after coming on in the 5-0 victory over Liverpool.
Ederson suffered a head injury after the horrible collision that saw Liverpool’s Sadio Mane shown a red card.
Manchester City are the favourites to progress to the next round of the competition, which isn’t surprising after their fantastic start to the new campaign.
Prediction: West Brom 1-3 City.
