It’s match day two in this season’s Champions League group stage and Manchester City host Shahktar Donetsk at the Etihad in what promises to be an entertaining tie with both teams getting three points on the opening match day.
Venue: The Etihad Stadium
Date and Time: 19:45 – Tuesday 26th September
City demolished Dutch champions Feyenoord 4-0 at De Kuip to the surprise of everyone. Most predicted a City win but not in the manner it happened, with City steamrolling the Rotterdam giants very early in the game.
City were 3-0 up after 25 minutes thanks to goals from John Stones, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus. There was no real response from Feyenoord, Ederson was barely tested, and City’s defence wasn’t put under much pressure with their intricate passes around the pitch. Stones scored another early in the second half which completed City’s Rotterdam rout.
City are in top form, having not lost in eight games in all competitions this season. The Ukrainian Champions will hope to end City’s streak on their turf.
They ruined many accumulators on matchday one after beating Italian side Napoli in Kharkiv. Causing an upset in Kharkiv could give the Ukrainian side some confidence facing the “shark team” as Benjamin Mendy would put it.
32,000 saw Shakhtar beat Napoli with goals from Taison and Facundo Ferreyra despite the fact that Arkadiusz Milik replied for Napoli with 20 minutes left of play from the penalty spot.
It will be tough for Pep Guardiola’s men to find a breakthrough with teams understanding the overwhelming force of City’s attack and preparing their defence suitably to attempt to keep out the Blues for as long as possible.
Shakhtar, like most teams this season, will try to hit City on the break, and they certainly have the quality to do so.
City are unbeaten in nine home games in the Champions League, and Shakhtar have only won once in England, so you can guess who the favourites are in this one.
Will history repeat itself or will Shahktar pull off another big shock in Europe?
Prediction: City 3-1 Shahktar
